We have created the first Design System for Sacmi HMI

The new design system consists of designing solutions centered around user experience and system usability, taking into account the industrial context of manufacturing.

We analyzed the current HMI interface through various remote workshops to explore the main machinery flows, as well as through field interviews with SACMI operators and customers.

During the interviews, we defined the main interface problems and we started to figure out the improvements needed based on the user needs.

After identifying the different issues with the current interface, we conducted an in-depth research in order to discover the solutions in the HMI market, with the aim of being able to emulate them within the new SACMI Interface.

The Usability Test was conducted on 15 users between the ages of 30 and 55, divided by Business Unit (6 for Tiles, 4 for Rigid Packaging IPS, and 5 for Rigid Packaging CCM). The purpose of this activity was to validate the best navigation structure within the HMI.

During the interview, participants were given some pure navigation tasks in order to collect feedback, comments, and impressions useful to improve the solution.

/

The design of a real Design System with its related documentation was essential to identify interface rules with the aim of creating a unique visual language that can be flexibly applied to any SACMI machinery. Specific design principles were defined, such as Zoning and Navigation, Grid, Colors, and Typography, as well as all the different components following the approach of atomic design.

The new interface has been applied to some screens for each Business Unit with the aim of demonstrating the possible flexibility achieved through the new guidelines.

All screens that differed from each other in terms of page structure have been redesigned with the new interface (e.g. standard page, full-page modal, dedicated flows, etc.)
